Hard Goods Buyer
Purchase Lawn & Garden Products, Containers, Planters, Glazed & Ceramic Pots, Furniture & any Garden Accessories.

  • Daily purchasing by fax, phone and/or internet to maintain proper inventory levels
  • Constant inventory monitoring, compare vendor pricing and quality
  • Constant vigilance to ensure “Chelsea quality control”
  • Always making sure that the Manager at both locations has a list of any incoming orders with necessary information, such as sold information, retail prices, should the order need to be split, making sure that it is properly done.
  • Always faxing vendors immediately if any discrepancies with orders, damages, shortage, wrong item, if merchandise is received damaged, taking pictures and email them to customer service.
  • Creating a ledger every spring with retail prices on the most popular companies for both locations
  • Creating signage for both locations for the most popular products to ease staff
  • Pricing any necessary catalogs that we offer special orders for both locations
  • Responsible for an over all Inventory twice a year (January & July) at both locations
  • Attend Trade shows; Atlanta (January) Chicago IGC (summer) & NY Gift Show (February & August) Commerce & Arett Show
  • Maintain budget compliance with CFO
  • Weekly visits to both locations (Manhattan & Brooklyn) to review inventory levels
  • Keep a detailed accounting of all purchases and approve invoices for payment
  • Always help the staff at both locations with all the above, merchandising, pricing, receiving, etc.
  • Helping at both locations with Merchandising product as best possible
  • Be active about special orders, request, proposals, etc. Always communicate with the staff regarding any of the above

Garden Center Manager
Chelsea Garden Center is a full-service garden center located in the heart of New York City. We are currently looking for a motivated individual to manage our retail location in midtown Manhattan. Candidate must have a degree in Horticulture from an accredited institution, or have a minimum of three years experience in the nursery/garden center field. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Opening and closing the store, oversee daily operations, heavy phone volume
  • Assist customers with plant, container and product selection
  • Supervise sales staff and yard crews
  • Scheduling for sales staff, yard crew, and truck crews. Process and relay payroll hours electronically on a weekly basis to our offices.
  • Train new employees on daily practices and procedures
  • Responsible for the general upkeep and appearance of the garden center
  • Make sure all plants and products are priced correctly and displayed properly
  • Ensure that all plant material is maintained to the highest of standards
  • Work closely and assist the operations manager with morning load outs of our landscape crew trucks to ensure they are properly loaded for the day's job goals
  • Coordinate with hard goods buyer to maintain sufficient inventories of all non-plant products
  • Coordinate with plant buyer to maintain sufficient inventories of plant materials
  • Supervise and assist operations manager with their duties, ensure that all Chelsea invoices, work orders and vendor inoices are promptly exchanged in the office, it is essential that accurate records keeping is maintained.

Candidates should have the following:

  • Experience in retail nursery or garden center
  • Knowledge of plants and related landscape products
  • Prior management experience required
  • Willingness to work long hours

Salary is commensurate with experience. Benefits include health insurance, paid vacation and sick days. Position is full-time over nine months, late March into late December.

Operations Manager
Candidate must have a degree or certificate in horticulture / floriculture from an accredited institution, or have a minimum of three years experience in the nursery/garden center field. The position includes the below outlined duties.

  • The scheduling and dispatching of delivers for landscape installations and maintenance from our New York garden center
  • Heavy phones and customer service are at the heart of this position
  • Review work orders and organizing for buyers, compile lists of needed nursery stock to complete pending orders. This list will be used on subsequent nursery runs and covers all trees, shrubs, vines and perennials required.
  • Compile a list of needed flowers for pending jobs, provide to plant buyer
  • Assist crews each morning to find pre-selected materials, load trucks for prompt dispatch. This will be a shared duty with yard staff and nursery manager
  • Regularly Nextel crews for updates and to check on schedule performance
    Work with sales staff on special orders and subsequent schedule timelines
  • Training new sales staff on the procedures for filling out a work order, this is to facilitate making all delivery information front and center and to reduce down time with deliveries as a result of missing information
  • Create daily computerized truck schedules to track both crews, COD collections, and to ensure that all on-account A/R billing reached the office for prompt billing
  • Calculate charges for jobs that are delivered COD via phone and Nextel with truck crews
  • Accurate record-keeping for store credits
  • Organizing and maintaining sold area, direct the yard staff to pull out materials from jobs that were canceled and ensure that remaining plants are maintained in good health by providing yard staff with updates on scheduling
  • Work with our garden designers to schedule special jobs and organize plant requests. Liaison with buyers and managers to meet client requests
  • Schedule maintenance contracts in weekly and monthly intervals
  • Sales/customer service - helping customers in yard to find or identify plants when time and scheduling permit you to be on the sales floor
  • Helping customers or salespeople find prices for plants or other merchandise
  • Helping customers find the right plants for sun or shade, windy or other conditions
  • Helping customers select the right fertilizer or insecticide products
  • Teach customers about plant care, watering and fertilizing schedules
  • As time permits in the off season, make quality control site visits

The position is full-time and spans nine months, April through December. Salary and benefits are commensurate with candidate's qualifications.

Administrative Assistant

  • Answer telephones and give information to callers, take messages, or transfer calls to appropriate individuals.
  • Complete forms in accordance with company procedures.
  • Compose, type, and distribute meeting notes, routine correspondence, and reports.
  • Greet visitors and callers, handle their inquiries, and direct them to the appropriate persons according to their needs.
  • Locate and attach appropriate files to incoming correspondence requiring replies.
  • Mail newsletters, promotional material, and other information.
  • Will be required to deposit checks at bank branches for company, taking and/or retrieving mailings from nearby postoffice.
  • Maintain scheduling and event calendars.
  • Make copies of correspondence and other printed material for office personnel.
  • Route, and distribute incoming mail and other material, and prepare answers to routine letters.
  • Schedule and confirm appointments for clients, customers, or supervisors.
  • Set up and maintain paper and electronic filing systems for records, correspondence, and other material such as work orders for customer jobs.
  • Conduct searches to find needed information, using such sources as the Internet, filing system, QuickBooks, etc.
  • Coordinate conferences and meetings at the request of office personnel.
  • Learn to operate new office technologies as they are developed and implemented.
  • Manage projects, and contribute to committee and team work.
  • Operate electronic mail systems and coordinate the flow of information both internally and with other organizations.
  • Order and dispense supplies.
  • Mail checks, estimates, invoices and other correspondence as directed.
  • Provide services to customers, such as order information and account information.
  • Review work done by others to check for correct spelling and grammar, ensure that company format policies are followed, and recommend revisions.
  • Operate office equipment such as fax machines, copiers, and phone systems, and use computers for spreadsheet, word processing, database management, and other applications.

Driver (CDL) / Landscaper
Driver / Landscaper needed for our landscape construction division. Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required. Landscaping skills are preferred but will train someone who is willing to learn. Garden Design/Sales

Garden Center Sales Staff
We have the most wonderful group of store employees anyone could ever ask for. That said, it's spring and we are taxed. We need both full and part time retail sales associates who love plants and love dispensing knowledgeable advice to our customers. At this time of year we prefer candidates with horticultural expertise but we are open to training willing enthusiasts.
